Child Support

n North Carolina, both parents are legally responsible for financially supporting their child. Child support is typically calculated using the official North Carolina Child Support Guidelines and one of three worksheets (A, B, or C), chosen based on your child custody arrangement:

  • Worksheet A is used when one parent has primary physical custody (the child spends fewer than 123 overnights per year with the other parent).
  • Worksheet B applies in true shared custody arrangements (123 or more overnights with each parent).
  • Worksheet C is used when parents split primary custody of multiple children (each parent is the primary custodian of at least one child).

The calculation starts with each parent’s gross monthly income, then adds or subtracts credits for health insurance premiums, work-related childcare, and certain extraordinary expenses. Small differences in reported income or expenses can dramatically change the final amount, so accuracy is critical.

Whether you’re establishing support during a divorce or separation agreement, seeking a modification, or believe the other parent’s numbers are inaccurate, the attorneys at Brazil Family Law can help. We guide you through gathering the correct financial documents, selecting the right worksheet, and, when necessary, uncovering unreported income or improper deductions. Our goal is a fair, guideline-based order that truly meets your child’s needs while protecting your rights.
